60 Persons Arrested Over Violent Attacks in Volta Region

About 60 persons suspected to be linked with the violent attacks of separatists in the Volta Region have been arrested.

Out of the number, 54 have been remanded in custody while the rest are being processed for court, the Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide has revealed.

Briefing the media in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital, after a closed door meeting with the Volta Regional House of Chiefs today, Mr. Hadzide noted that the government has intensified security in the country, especially the region to bring the insurgency under control.

Separatists on Friday, September 25, 2020 blocked major entry points into the Volta Region, attacked two police stations, freed inmates, injured Police officers, stole guns, attacked the North Tongu District Assembly and seized two vehicles which were later retrieved.

One Tuesday, September 29, 2020 the criminals attacked the STC Bus Terminal in Ho, assaulted drivers and a security officer and torched two buses leaving one completely burnt beyond repairs.

Although, the government has described the attacks as diversional and a frustrated attack after being unsuccessful with bigger targets, the public have charged the security agencies to live up to expectation and deal with the situation head-on.

Mr. Hadzide assured that the situation was under control and that the separatists will surely be dealt with. He revealed that security personnel have been deployed to cover the Volta and Oti regions to ensure that the attacks of the separatists are curtailed and peace is maintained. Some of the places include, Juapong, Hohoe, Aflao, Nkonya/Alavanyo and Kpando in Volta and Kpassa and Kete Krachi in Oti.

The Deputy Minister who also joined the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa and other top government officials to meet the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, noted that the government is resolute on its decision not to engage the Separatists in a dialogue because their actions are purely criminal.

He said the meeting which lasted for over three hours saw a frank and open discussion between them and the Chiefs. The government delegation which was led by the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah also heard the suggestions of the Chiefs.

Mr. Hadzide expressed gratitude to the Chiefs for their assurance of cooperation with the government and strong dissociation from the separatists and their criminal activities.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Letsa tasked the media to be circumspect in their reportage in order not to jeopardise the security of the region and the country as a whole.

Other members of the delegation included Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, Defence Minister, Dominic Ntiwul, Chieftaincy Minister, Kofi Dzamesi, Regional Re-Organization Minister, Dan Botwe and other security chiefs.
