The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has officially suspended its strike following a unanimous decision by members nationwide.
The suspension takes effect immediately, as stated in a UTAG announcement released on October 29, 2024, and signed by National President Prof. Mamudu Akudugu.
The statement noted, “The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) wishes to inform the public that, effective immediately, we have decided to suspend our strike action addressing the urgent crisis of illegal mining, or galamsey. This decision, while difficult, comes in response to the widespread and democratic vote by UTAG members nationwide.”
UTAG emphasised its unwavering support and commitment to protecting the country’s natural resources from the damaging effects of illegal mining activities.
The association added that the decision to suspend the strike was not made lightly but was necessitated by the current circumstances and the impact of the strike on students.
UTAG assured the public that it will explore other alternatives, including legal means, to address the issue of illegal mining.
“Suspending the strike was not an easy decision, as we recognize the importance of the cause we are advocating for. We understand that this may disappoint some members of the public, and we do not take their confidence in us lightly. However, the current circumstances in the country, as well as the interests of our students and their parents/guardians, have made it necessary to explore alternative legal avenues to address this critical issue,” the statement read.
