Eric Ato Appiah Mends, acting Gyaasehene of the Nkusukum Traditional Area in the Central Region, has been remanded into two weeks police custody by the Cape Coast District Court 1 for the murder of 52-year-old Kwesi Mekyeawo.
The incident occurred on Friday, October 25, during preparations for the Nkusukum Odambea Festival, where an altercation led to the Gyaasehene pulling out a gun and shooting the deceased in the head.
The suspect reported himself to the Mankessim Divisional Police Command and was arraigned before the court, presided over by Her Worship Anita Sheila Crabbe. ASP Daniel Gadzo, Prosecutor for the case, requested more time for police investigation.
Family Head Abuapanyin Solomon Ato Budu-Hegan expressed shock and condemned the suspect’s actions, describing him as a self-styled chief.
Nana Amoa l, Gyaasehene for Nkusukum Amansea, appealed for a speedy trial, urging the court to deal with the suspect without bias.
The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
