The Ghana Beach Volleyball men’s team among other sporting disciplines represented the nation at the 2019 African games in Morocco, Rabat from 16th to 31st August, 2019.
The duo of Sammy Essilfie and Kelvin Carboo made up the team with Moro Mumuni as the coach of the side. Going into the competition as silver medalists from the 2019 SAL games in Cape Verde, the expectations and hopes were high.
In the preliminaries stage, they lost their first match against South Africa by 0 -2, though they exhibited and played very well. They had a sweet victory over Sudan by winning 2-0 and unfortunately lost 0-2 in the hands of an experienced side Sierra Leone, which was a crucial encounter.
The team progressed to the quarter finals where they took on Rwanda, but could not stand the might and unfortunately lost by 0-2. They finally lost to Mozambique and Nigeria who are strong forces to reckon with by losing 0-2 and 1-2 in the 5th and 8th place classification stage respectively.
Speaking on Amanie weekend sports the head coach of the side Moro Mumuni, reiterated the need for the government, National Sports Authority and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to treat all sports equal in terms of funding for training.
“We could have won many medals but our preparations was not enough that caused us to perform below average at the games. We also lack training equipment’s, because when I compare ourselves to other countries, I can say we are far behind”. the coach stressed.
The Beach Volleyball team is expected to continue training for the next upcoming competitions.
