Assin Central constituency in the Central region is benefitting from several projects under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP), also known as the one million dollars per constituency initiative, a flagship of the Akufo-Addo administration.

One of such projects is the 3-unit classroom block being built by the Coastal Development Authority (CODA) at Otabil Nkwanta community in Assin Central.

Project Selection

The need for educational infrastructure for schools within the communities was identified as one of the pressing social concerns of the constituency. Thus, the outcome of stakeholder engagement and needs assessment was for CODA to channel support under IPEP towards providing educational facilities.

CODA projects in Assin Central constituency

Informed by the needs of Assin Central, CODA is constructing a total of four 3-unit classroom blocks with ancillary faciliti8es and two community-based health and planning services (CHPS) compounds.

In addition to Otabil Nikwanta, construction of classroom blocks is ongoing at Ankaase, Wurakese Station, and Al-Huda Basic School at Fosu Zongo. Construction of the CHPS compounds is also ongoing at Assin Dompin and Assin Assamang communities.

Bottom-up Developmental Approach

CODA employs a bottom-up approach in project selection and implementation under IPEP. The approach enables communities in beneficiary constituencies to make input into the determination of priorities based on constituency needs.

CODA leads the implementation of IPEP in the 109 constituencies in the six regions that make up the coastal development zone namely Greater Accra, Central, Volta, Western, Western north and Oti regions. IPEP, which allocates one million dollars or its cedi equivalent to each constituency annually, is designed to ensure citizen participation in accelerating economic and social development.

Aside constituency specific projects, fishers are benefitting from the distribution of outboard motors at highly subsidised prices while traders are benefitting form the CODA Credit Union.
