The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly celebrated this year’s National Farmers day with official recognition and awards for distinguished farmers and institutions within the constituency, on Friday, 5th December, 2025 at the forecourt of the assembly, and was held on the theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure The Future”.
The annual National Farmers Day is aimed at honouring Ghanaian farmers making significant progress within the agricultural sector across the country.
Addressing the constituents and participants, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Frank Nkansah highlighted the assembly’s efforts to support farmers in the area, despite the limited land available. He mentioned that many residents are engaged in livestock farming, poultry, and vegetable production, and have benefited from training programs and feeds provided by the assembly.
He expressed gratitude to institutions like Rana Motors for their support and encouraged others to follow suit, saying, “We are very fortunate to have a lot of institutions around like Rana Motors who has also played a very instrumental role in our program today.”
Hon. Nkansah emphasized the assembly’s commitment to promoting farming among young people, with initiatives targeting basic school students and youth.
He again announced plans to provide materials and equipment to schools and support youth-led farming projects, including the “Nkuko Nkitinkiti Nkitinkiti” initiative.
The MCE, however, urged residents to view farming as a viable occupation, saying, “Farming is not punishment. It’s an occupation and we must also see ourselves getting there.”
Mr. Kassim Mohammed Odaymat, Chief Operating Officer at Rana Motors, praised the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for his efforts in engaging with local businesses and institutions. He emphasized the importance of community collaboration for growth and development, stating that Rana Motors is committed to supporting the municipality.
Mr. Odaymat again highlighted the company’s initiatives to create employment opportunities for the youth, including the West African Vehicle Academy, which trains young people in the automotive industry.
“Rana Motors is dedicated to investing in the youth, spreading knowledge, and providing experience and employment opportunities to drive growth and development in the community”
Odaymat stressed that investing in the youth is crucial for the nation’s advancement, saying, “Youth is the only salvation for our nation. The only way we can advance is to invest in our youth, is to invest in education and make sure that we can move forward.”
The Agricultural Director of the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, Sussana Enyonam Adjei reiterated that this year marks the municipality’s fifth such event. She highlighted the paradox of operating in a densely‑urban area with little land, yet praised the unwavering dedication of farmers, processors, marketers and backyard growers who keep food on local tables.
“We honor you and express our deepest appreciation, and emphasized the national theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” which calls for food self‑sufficiency, reduced imports and collective responsibility across every district, she said.
Madam Adjei outlined the municipality’s concrete actions—extension services for urban crops and livestock, nutrition education, promotion of women and youth in agriculture, and support for alternative enterprises such as mushroom, fish, snail and rabbit farming. She acknowledged challenges like limited space, waste management and rising input costs, but pointed to growing opportunities in urban vegetable production and value‑added activities.
She reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to urban agriculture and urged collaboration among all stakeholders, stating, “The future of our food system will rely on innovation, responsible consumption, and close collaboration among farmers, metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, the private sector, researchers and the wider community.”
Nine farmers and one agricultural staff were honoured including Best Livestock Farmer, Best Poultry Farmer, Best Catfish Farmer, Best Woman Farmer, Best Enterprising Youth, Best Processor, Best Institution, Best Agric Staff, Best Runner-Up, and Hendrix Conrad Nii Kortei Quaye adjuged as the Municipal Overall Best Farmer.
