The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has assured residents that it remains committed to consistent waste collection across all areas under its jurisdiction.
Speaking to Amanie News on January 29, AMA’s Public Relations Officer, Gilbert Ankrah, addressed concerns about waste management and homelessness in the capital. He outlined the assembly’s ongoing efforts to tackle these issues despite existing challenges.
Mr. Ankrah emphasized that waste collection remains a top priority, noting that areas like Circle, which fall under AMA’s jurisdiction, have their refuse cleared daily.
“If you come to Circle, waste is being cleared in the areas under AMA, and this happens on a daily basis,” he stated in his interview with the media. He further assured residents that, beginning this year, AMA has implemented measures to ensure waste is collected citywide every day.
This assurance comes at a time when Accra faces increasing urbanization, leading to rising waste accumulation in several parts of the city. Despite these challenges, Mr. Ankrah stressed that AMA is expanding its waste management services to cover more areas and operate at higher frequencies.
However, he acknowledged that homelessness—another critical issue in Accra—is a more complex problem that requires a multi-agency approach. He explained that while AMA plays a role, addressing homelessness is not solely its responsibility. It requires collaboration with institutions such as the Department of Social Welfare and other social service agencies.
“The issue of homelessness requires collaboration with other institutions, and we have been actively working with them to address the situation,” Mr. Ankrah stated. However, he admitted that a lack of formal shelters remains a major challenge in providing long-term solutions for the homeless in Accra.
AMA remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to both waste management and homelessness in the capital.
