Asafo-Adjei Criticizes Foreign Minister Over Alleged ECOWAS–AU Trade-Off

The Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, has accused the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, of relinquishing Ghana’s chance to assume the Presidency of the ECOWAS Commission in return for what he claims was an already “prearranged” bid for President John Mahama to become African Union (AU) Chairperson in 2027.

In a press statement, the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee alleged that the Minister surrendered Ghana’s entitlement to the ECOWAS Commission leadership in exchange for what he described as a “so-called unanimous endorsement” from West African leaders backing President Mahama as the sole candidate for the AU Chairmanship.

He further argued that Ghana did not need to negotiate or trade concessions to secure the AU position, insisting that the process had already been initiated during the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He maintained that President Mahama’s elevation to the position of AU Chairperson in 2027 had effectively been settled as early as 2024, following Ghana’s election to the Bureau of the Assembly of the African Union.

According to him, the AU’s rotational structure places member states on a clear progression path. Ghana, he noted, advanced from serving as 3rd Vice Chairperson in 2024 to 2nd Vice Chairperson in 2025, and then to 1st Vice Chairperson at the February 2026 Summit — positioning the country next in line for the Chairperson role.
