Augustine Ahinful Calls for the Abolishment of Management Committees for National Teams

Former Black Stars striker Augustine Ahinful has proposed the abolishment of Management Committees for Ghana’s national football teams, following the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) announcement of a new Management Committee for the Black Stars. This comes in the wake of the dissolution of the previous committee, chaired by Mark Addo, after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In an interview with Sporty FM, Ahinful questioned the relevance and effectiveness of the current Management Committees, advocating instead for the establishment of a National Management Board. He suggested that such a board, composed of a diverse group of individuals—not exclusively football experts—would provide a more strategic and informed approach to managing the country’s national teams.

“I have served on a Management Committee before, and I believe a National Management Board would be more effective,” Ahinful explained. “It should not be limited to football people. A broader perspective would enhance decision-making for the various national teams we have.”

Ahinful proposed that the board could delegate tasks more efficiently. “If we have 10 members on the National Management Board, two could be assigned to oversee specific games for the Black Stars. This approach would be practical, especially since the GFA already has employees who can handle operational work,” he added.

The former striker also criticized the lack of efficiency among some committee members, recounting his own experiences. “Many people on these committees contribute little to nothing. When I served on a committee, some members were unaware of basic details, like the age eligibility of players invited. I had to point out that certain players couldn’t represent the Black Satellites because they were overage.”

He emphasized that committees, if deemed necessary, should be more proactive in guiding and advising the technical teams of the national squads.

The newly announced Black Stars Management Committee is chaired by Dr. Randy Abbey, a member of the GFA Executive Council, who will liaise with the government and other stakeholders. Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah serves as Vice-Chairman, focusing on player relations. Other members include Samuel Aboabire, Chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Football Association; Moses Armah, President of Medeama Sporting Club; and Richard Nsenkyire, President of FC Samartex 1996. Each member has been assigned specific operational, matchday, and special responsibilities.

Ahinful’s call for reform highlights growing concerns about the structure and efficiency of football administration in Ghana, prompting a critical conversation about the future of the national teams.
