The president of the Republic of Togo, Faure Eyadéma Gnassingbé has declared a 3-month State Public Health Emergency in the country to help curb the spread of Covid-19.
Authorities in the small West African nation of about 8million people, have imposed a 3-month curfew from 7pm to 6am each day effective Thursday,April 2,2020.
President Faure Gnassingbé (who has been in office for about 15 years now) has also established a special force(through decree) of about 5,000 security agents to help maintain discipline in the country throughout the 3 month period.
Pro-poor measures such as free distribution of money to those who are most affected by the crisis,supply of free water and electricity for the most vulnerable as well as reduction in water bills to the general population were outlined by the president in his address to the nation on Wednesday, April 1,2020.
The Togolese leader who is serving his fourth term as president also announced a XOF400 billion National Fund to support businesses affected by the novel covid-19.
