December polls: The fear of defeat making Akufo-Addo harass us with police – NDC

The biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that it will resist any attempts by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to break its front or cow its members into silence in the run-up to the December polls.

According to the party, the government is sensing defeat and, so, has started scheming to humiliate its members.

The NDC’s comments come a day after the arrest of its National Communication Officer, Mr Sammy Gyamfi on Monday, 27 January 2020 at the premises of Peace FM in Accra.

At a press conference on Tuesday, 28 January 2020, the party’s Director of Communication, Mr Kakra Essamuah, said: “The NDC has credible intelligence that this arrest forms part of a larger scheme of intimidation and harassment calculated at breaking our front and cowing us into silence in the run-up to the 2020 elections.

“Sensing a humiliating defeat in the elections because of the pronounced maladministration characterised by massive corruption, unprecedented levels of nepotism, excruciating economic hardships, arrogance and waste of public resources through ostentation, the Akufo-Addo government has resorted to these discredited tactics to stay afloat.

“Sadly, some elements within the Ghana Police Service, who should otherwise act professionally, have allowed themselves to be used as pliant tools in the execution of this sinister agenda of hate and harassment against opponents and critics of President Akufo-Addo. Ladies and gentlemen of the press, in the process, they have chosen to disregard the sanctity of our courts and treated them with contempt.

“You would recall that the attempts to arrest our National Communication Officer is not new. It started in December last year. Subsequent to this, he filed an application at the human rights court to prevent the breach of his fundamental human rights by the police”.

The NDC warned that it would embark on a series of activities to press home its demand for an immediate cessation of the harassment and intimidation of its leading members.
