Ghana has officially joined the international community to mourn the death of African-American, George Floyd, whose death last week sparked protests across the United States and beyond.

A public invitation to the memorial service was issued by the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Ghana Tourism Authority, Office of the Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency and the Diaspora African Forum for participants to attend the memorial service in honour of George Floyd’s death.

The service which is taking place today Friday, June 5, 2020, is being held at the Dubois Centre in the building of the Diaspora African Forum in Accra.

  1. “The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, The Ghana Tourism Authority, Office of Diaspora Affairs (Office of The President) and The Diaspora of African Forum respectfully invites you to a ceremony in honour of George Floyd,” portions of the public invitation read.

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed face down in the street.

Two other officers further restrained Floyd and a fourth officer prevented onlookers from intervening. During the final three minutes, Floyd was motionless and had no pulse. Officers made no attempt to revive him, and Chauvin’s knee remained on Floyd’s neck when emergency medical technicians attempted to treat him.
