0

As part of efforts to improve sanitation and related services at Assin Praso community in the Assin North constituency, the Coastal Development Authority (CODA) has completed the construction of a 20-seater disability friendly water closet toilet with ancillary facilities. The project was funded by the Authority from the constituency’s share of the one million dollars per constituency initiative also known as Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP).

Significance of project

The new facility, the biggest in the community, is appropriate and timely in addressing the urgent sanitation needs of Assin Praso. The new disability-friendly WC toilet is also the first of its kind in the community which makes it convenient for physically challenged persons to patronise the public toilet.

Project selection

The need to build a modern disability-friendly water closet public toilet facility for the Assin Praso community became evident during a consensus building process. Engagement with community stakeholders and needs assessment revealed sanitation as a key social challenge and indicated the need for the facility as a top priority. The selection process also highlighted the necessity to incorporate disability-friendly features to make it usable for all sections of the community.

CODA projects in Assin North

In addition to the 20-seater disability WC in Assin Praso, CODA is constructing a number of other priority projects in the Assin North constituency under IPEP. These include a community durbar grounds at Assin Dansame, a small market at Assin Kushea, and a steel bridge over river Asunsu at Krofofardo. CODA is also constructing two 3-unit classroom blocks with ancillary facilities at Breman and Obirikwaku communities with ongoing construction of a 6-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Bereku Methodist School. There is also ongoing construction of a community-based health planning and services (CHPS) compound at Atwereboanda and a 20-seater disability-friendly WC toilet with ancillary facilities at Gangan.
