Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has received acclaim from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for his management of Tuesday’s parliamentary procedures.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party’s general secretary, praised the Speaker’s handling of the day’s events, calling it an example of parliamentary leadership.

The NDC commended Bagbin in a statement released on October 22 for his maturity and fair management of the session, which they said demonstrated his dedication to protecting the interests of the legislative body and the country.

The party expressed hope that Bagbin will continue to preserve the independence of Parliament and emphasized how his leadership has increased the institution’s legitimacy.

“We applaud him for working in the interest of Parliament and the people of Ghana and enhancing the integrity of Parliament with his leadership,”

The announcement follows Alban Bagbin’s announcement on Tuesday that parliamentary proceedings will be adjourned indefinitely.

The action follows a turbulent day in the chamber that was marked by intense arguments between National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs on whose caucus had the majority.

Speaker Bagbin mentioned in passing during the adjournment announcement that he had received a message from the Supreme Court instructing him to revoke his previous decision declaring four parliamentary seats vacant.

He did not, however, go into further information about the message, so MPs and observers were unaware of the ramifications of the Court’s order.

Despite having the numbers to conduct business, the Speaker told the House on Tuesday that they lacked the numbers necessary to make decisions.
