A Catholic Priest, Rev. Father Emmanuel Angmor from Akyem – Asuom in the Kwaebibirim Municipality of the Eastern Region, and seven other passengers have been attacked by armed robbers on Thursday night.
The Priest was on a missionary assignment to spread the gospel with a sister church at Abaam while, on his way back home, the armed men attacked him from a far distance and started firing a gun in the vehicle he was driving.
The Roman father, who was also driving a Nissan Pick up with registration No. GN 8091-14, about 7:25 pm was returning from Abaam to Asuom township said he met the armed robbers numbering about six with two of them holding pump action guns.
He told the Police that the robbers shot at the passenger side door and the back windscreen as well as the front tire of the driver’s side causing damage to them all.
The gang of 8 armed robbers on Thursday night held hostage seven passengers plying the road from Akyem – Asuom to Kade.
The armed robbers as gathered blocked the deployable road between the two communities with firewood and robbed the passengers.
A driver, Abubakari Sule, also a victim who was using a Honda CRV with no registration number onboard with six persons from Asuom going to Kade, upon reaching a section of the road, he found out that the road had been blocked with firewood.
He told the Police that he was going to Abaam and just about five kilometers from Asuom they met a group of armed robbers numbering about eight with two of them holding pump-action guns who shot at them causing damage to their vehicle windscreen and deflated the tires.
He reportedly slowed down and all of a sudden about 8 armed robbers came out from the bush wearing masks and held them, hostage, by ordering them to lay on the grounds, and fired at his car.
In the process, they caused damage to the windscreen, the rear glass of the driver side was also smashed as well the front tire deflated.
The Asuom District Police officer, DSP Stephen Abanga with four of his men on board SV/No. GP 281 when had the information proceeded to the crime scene, but upon their arrival, met the absence of the armed robbers.
The Police combed the area and found three spent and three used BBB Cartridges but none of the robbers were traced.
The Police went back with their three unused shells of BBB cartridges and three empty shells of BBB cartridges to the station.
Meanwhile, the Police had since been patrolling the road to provide security for the passengers using the road.
