Why ‘sankofa’ is trending after Donald Trump becomes US president-elect

The outcome of events in the U.S. elections, with Republican Donald Trump projected to be elected president, has caused the word ‘Sankofa’ to trend on X.

Sankofa, in the local parlance, means to ‘take back’ or to ‘go back and reclaim’ something or someone.

Ghanaians are juxtaposing America’s vote for Donald Trump, a former president, with the victory of the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, who is also a former president, in the December polls.

According to netizens, Trump’s win mirrors John Mahama’s victory, which they believe is imminent, calling for a change in government and governance.

Images of John Mahama have since flooded social media, especially X, with the caption “Sankofa,” signaling calls for Mahama’s return as president.

Some netizens argue that going back to reclaim someone is not a taboo, and they are expressing confidence that Ghanaians will vote John Mahama back into office.

They believe that Mahama’s return to the presidency will help improve Ghana’s future.

Others, however, hold contrary views, asserting that a second term for Mahama could spell doom for the country, given his past performance as president.
