Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to improving the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, pledging to address its challenges and enhance the overall quality of education.
Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Mahama emphasized that education remains a top priority for his administration.
He outlined key measures to strengthen the Free SHS programme, including securing dedicated funding and decentralizing food procurement to improve efficiency and resource allocation.
“Education will remain a priority, and we are committed to creating the best possible learning environment for students at all levels. Our goal is to equip young people with the skills they need to compete in the global economy. As part of this, we will improve the Free SHS programme by ensuring dedicated funding and streamlining food procurement processes,” Mahama stated.
Additionally, he announced plans to introduce a “no academic fees” policy to provide financial aid for continuing students, as well as expand infrastructure in tertiary institutions to accommodate the increasing student population.
“We will introduce a ‘no academic fees’ policy to support continuing students financially and invest in expanding tertiary infrastructure to meet growing demand,” he added.
