Abdul Aziz Ali, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA), has called on the government to support Ghana’s textile industry by establishing more local factories under the “One District, One Factory” (1D1F) initiative.
Addressing a gathering at the maiden regional conference in Accra on November 7, 2024, Ali stressed the need to reduce dependency on imported fabrics to make local products more affordable for customers.
“The fabrics that we are using are not from here; we buy them from Dubai and other countries. If we focus on opening more factories locally, it will help us access fabrics at a cheaper rate, making our products more affordable and helping our industry grow,” he said.
He expressed pride in the association’s achievements and emphasised the importance of the conference as a space for members to connect, share skills, and uplift the industry.
The three-day event, which began on November 4, 2024, also included a donation to the Nsawam Female Prisons, reflecting the association’s commitment to social responsibility.
Other activities, including a float through Greater Accra, helped build momentum leading to today’s main Durbar.
The conference, held at the Elwak Sports Stadium, marked a milestone for the region’s tailoring and dressmaking community, bringing together national and regional executives, members of the La Traditional Council, and representatives from various organizations.
